RUNEBOUND CHARACTERS

In Runebound, destiny is carved through blood, ancestral memory, and will.
The figures within this world are bound by oaths, haunted by forgotten symbols,

and driven by visions both personal and prophetic.
This page offers a glimpse into their lives, relationships, and the paths that shape the greater tapestry of the saga.

Pribislav of Mecklenburg

Pribislav

Once a proud son of an Obotrite chieftain and now a reluctant Christian ally and the ruler of Mecklenburg, Pribislav walks a tenuous path between ancestral loyalty and political survival. Father to Henry, Milena, and Nicholas, he is a man torn between the old gods and the rising tide of Christendom — a ruler haunted by the choices that could either protect his realm or erase his people from history forever.

Woizlava of Pomerania within the walls of Mecklenburg Castle

Woizlava

A woman of quiet power and unyielding spirit, Woizlava is the steadfast wife of Pribislav and mother to Henry, Milena, and Nicholas. Raised in the old ways yet forced to navigate the tightening grip of Christendom, she is a quiet keeper of Slavic traditions within a court that would see them forgotten. Though she plays the role of dutiful wife, her heart remains bound to the gods of her ancestors and to the children she fears may be swallowed by fate.

Dobrawa jpg.jpg

Dobrawa

Steeped in the old magic and ancestral memory, Dobrawa is the castle midwife and a bridge between the living and the unseen. She was the first to touch Milena’s newborn skin, the first to see the mark of the runes upon her. Keeper of secrets and ancient rites, Dobrawa carries the knowledge of childbirth and forbidden prophecies — wisdom she will use to guide Milena, even as the world around them darkens.

Bishop Anselm dressed in intricate robes inside the Mecklenburg Castle Chapel

Bishop Anselm

A man of iron conviction cloaked in holy robes, Bishop Anselm is a fervent servant of the Church and a relentless force in the conversion of Mecklenburg. With words as sharp as any blade and eyes that see both sin and opportunity, he is determined to stamp out the old ways, no matter the cost. Calculating and uncompromising, he seeks to bind Milena’s fate to the will of Christendom, using faith as both a weapon and a shackle.

The Obotrite Seer in her Hut deep in Mecklenburg Forest

The Obotrite Seer

Deep within the forest, where mist clings to ancient trees and whispers seem to drift between worlds, lives the Obotrite Seer, a woman feared and revered in equal measure. Said to be older than memory and wiser than any priest, she serves as the last living bridge between the people of Mecklenburg and the forgotten gods of their ancestors. Her eyes, clouded by visions, see beyond the veil of the present into paths yet unwalked and fates not yet fulfilled.

Milena of Mecklenburg

Milena

Born to a princely court yet drawn to the ancient ways of her ancestors, Milena stands between two worlds. As the daughter of Prince Pribislav, she is expected to fulfill her duty through an arranged marriage, but her heart yearns for something beyond the future chosen for her. Guided by intuition and aided by Dobrawa, she ventures into the forest in search of answers. Her visit to the hut of the Obotrite Seer marks the first step upon a path that will alter the course of her life forever.

Henry.jpg

Henry

Born to inherit his father's lands and title, Henry has been raised to place duty above all else. Thoughtful, disciplined, and fiercely loyal to his family, he understands the sacrifices required to preserve Mecklenburg in a changing world. Yet while he accepts the path laid before him, he finds it far more difficult to accept the one chosen for his sister Milena. As heir to his father's legacy, Henry stands ready to shoulder the burdens of leadership, even when they weigh heavily upon his heart.

Nicholas of Mecklenburg

Nicholas

The youngest of Prince Pribislav’s children, Nicholas, brings warmth and laughter to Mecklenburg Castle. Bright, curious, and full of questions, he views the world with the wonder that only childhood can preserve. Deeply devoted to his sister Milena, he follows her whenever he can and treasures every moment they share. Though still too young to understand the burdens carried by those around him, Nicholas remains a source of comfort and joy to his family.

The Saxon Tutor Lady Gertrude holding a worn leather Psalter

Lady Gertrude

Rigid, pious, and unrelenting, Lady Gertrude was sent from Saxony to shape Milena into the ideal Christian bride. Her every lesson is a sermon, her every word a command, enforcing the virtues of obedience and chastity while stamping out any trace of pagan influence. Fiercely devout and deeply contemptuous of anything she deems heathen, Gertrude sees Milena’s wild spirit as a flaw to be corrected — a spark that must be snuffed out before it spreads.

Brynjar Sigmundsson on the docks of Mecklenburg Landing

Brynjar Sigmundsson

The eldest son of Jarl Sigmund Brynjar embodies the strength, discipline, and honor expected of a Norse warrior. Reserved by nature and steadfast in his convictions, he rarely reveals what lies beneath his calm exterior. Yet under the warrior's composure beats a compassionate heart and an unwavering sense of duty. When fate brings him into Milena's path, Brynjar finds himself confronting choices that will test his loyalty, courage, and the future he once thought certain.

Jarl Sigmund at Mecklenburg Castle

Jarl Sigmund

A towering presence both in stature and spirit, Jarl Sigmund is the respected leader of Rungardvik, one of the few remaining pagan strongholds of the North. A seasoned warrior, trader, and seafarer, he has spent his life navigating both the dangers of the sea and the shifting currents of politics. Wise, pragmatic, and fiercely loyal to the old gods, Sigmund commands the respect of his people through strength, fairness, and unwavering conviction. He is the father of Brynjar, Ylva, and Halla, and the guardian of his settlement's future.

David at Mecklenburg Lake in Runebound

David Ben Nathaniel

A merchant and scholar from the distant city of Jerusalem, David has traveled farther than most men could imagine, gathering knowledge, stories, and secrets from across the known world. Thoughtful, perceptive, and guided by hard-earned wisdom, he often sees what others overlook. An outsider to Mecklenburg, he forms an unlikely bond with Milena, offering counsel and friendship when she needs both. Yet beneath his calm demeanor lies a purpose tied to an ancient mystery, one that has drawn him northward in search of answers.

Heinrich.jpg

Heinrich of Lüneburg

A Saxon noble of proud stature and measured restraint, Heinrich bears the weight of his name with both honor and arrogance. Draped in finely worked velvet and adorned with the lion symbol of his house, he carries himself with the effortless confidence of one raised to be obeyed. His demeanor is poised, his words are neither cruel nor kind, but always purposeful. Promised to Milena by decree, he walks the path set before him without question, believing duty to be its own form of virtue.

Brother Collistus.jpg

Brother Collistus

A devoted servant of Bishop Anselm, Brother Collistus carries out his duties with quiet efficiency and unquestioning obedience. Outwardly humble and disciplined, he believes deeply in the Church's mission to root out heresy and bring wayward souls into the light of the faith. Beneath his pious exterior lies a dangerous zeal, one that leaves little room for mercy or doubt. Where others hesitate, Collistus acts, convinced that any sacrifice is justified in service to a greater cause.

Henry the Lion, Duke of Saxony and Bavaria

Henry the Lion

Few wield power with such grace—or such precision, as Henry the Lion. Duke of Saxony and Bavaria, he is both patron and predator, cloaked in civility and crowned by conquest. It was his hand that ended the reign of Niklot, and his word that restored Pribislav to his lands, though not until the oath was taken. To the world, he is a Christian sovereign, measured and just. But beneath the gold and gospel lies a sharper truth: Henry does not seek peace. He cultivates control.

Father Ekbert.jpg

Father Ekbert

Stern of face and spare of frame, Father Ekbert serves both the Church and the will of Lord Heinrich with equal fervor. His sermons ring with conviction, yet beneath the cadence of holy words lies a keen awareness of courtly politics. He moves quietly through halls and cloisters alike, a presence whose counsel can shape not only the conscience of a man but the course of an alliance. To those who cross Heinrich, his blessings may come slower, his penances harsher. In Ekbert’s eyes, loyalty to his lord is no less a sacred duty than loyalty to God.

Uwe.jpg

Uwe, the Steward

A sloth of a man in both build and bearing, Uwe moves through Mecklenburg’s halls with the unhurried certainty of one who knows every corner belongs to him as much as to his lord. His tunic is often wrinkled, his belt strained, and his hands more accustomed to pastry than sword or plough. Yet beneath his languid manner lies a meticulous mind—no debt escapes his ledger, no rumor escapes his notice. Those who mistake his slouch for disinterest soon learn that Uwe hears everything and forgets nothing.

The Squire.jpg

Lothar, the Squire

A young Saxon in Heinrich’s service, the squire carries himself with quiet diligence and a watchful eye. His long blond hair falls loosely about his shoulders, framing a face still touched by youth yet tempered by the discipline of court life. Ever at his lord’s side, he tends to armor, mounts, and the finer details of ceremony with the same precision he would a blade. Though his station demands silence, his bearing speaks of loyalty, patience, and a readiness to step forward should duty call.
