The Rune of Becoming

Berkana is the breath of new life—the first green leaf after winter, the sacred stillness of a womb before it stirs. It is the rune of birth, yes—but not only of the body. Berkana marks the beginnings of identity, intuition, and inner transformation. It is the moment before a decision, the place where fate takes hold. In the Elder Futhark, Berkana is the gentle but unstoppable force of becoming. Like the birch tree it represents, it is flexible yet resilient, soft in appearance, but rooted in ancient strength.

Symbolic Meaning

In traditional rune lore, Berkana governs:

  • Birth and motherhood (both literal and symbolic)

  • Female strength and quiet resilience

  • Growth through healing

  • Safe transitions and sacred thresholds

  • The nurturing of new ideas, identities, or callings

It invites us to care for what is not yet fully formed—and to trust the process of emergence.

Historical Context

The name Berkana stems from the Proto-Germanic word berkanan, meaning “birch tree.” In Old Norse, the corresponding term is bjarkan, a poetic form that appears in skaldic verse and kennings, often evoking purity, new beginnings, and feminine strength. The birch tree held sacred significance across many Germanic and Slavic cultures—it was the first to awaken in spring, symbolizing renewal, fertility, and protection against dark forces. In runic inscriptions, Berkana was sometimes used not only as a phonetic symbol but as a charm for healing, safe childbirth, or to bless a home. Its upright, sheltering form also mirrored the protective aspect of the feminine—the mother, the midwife, the guardian of sacred thresholds.

Berkana in The Last Rune of Rungardvik

In the saga, Berkana is the first rune to awaken. It signals a break from inherited fate and a return to ancestral memory. It marks the beginning of Milena’s transformation. Berkana reminds us that every journey worth taking begins with a quiet crack in the shell. A pulse. A root beginning to grow.
