DOBERAN ABBEY

Founded in 1171 by Prince Pribislav of Mecklenburg, Doberan Abbey became one of the most important religious centers in the region during the Middle Ages. Established as a Cistercian monastery following Pribislav's conversion to Christianity, it played a significant role in the spread of the
new faith among the formerly pagan lands of the Obotrites.
The abbey stood as both a spiritual and political symbol of a changing era. While much of the original twelfth-century monastery has been lost to time, Doberan remains closely associated with the transformation of Mecklenburg from a Slavic principality into a Christian realm.
