Mecklenburg Castle was the ancestral seat of the Obotrite princes and gave its name to the entire region of Mecklenburg. Situated near present-day Dorf Mecklenburg, just south of Wismar Bay, it served as an important political and cultural center of the Obotrite realm during the early and high Middle Ages. By the twelfth century, it stood at the crossroads of a changing world, where Slavic traditions, Norse trade, Saxon expansion, and the spread of Christianity converged.

Although the original fortress was destroyed centuries ago, its legacy endured. The descendants of the Obotrite ruler Niklot continued to govern the region as the House of Mecklenburg, and the name of the castle itself survived to become the name of one of northern Germany's most enduring historical regions.
