WAYFARE CHARACTERS

In Wayfare, destiny is a road forged in movement, survival, and the relentless will of forces unseen.

The figures within this part of the saga are shaped by displacement, bound by uncertain loyalties, and driven by the shifting tides of old gods and new powers. This page offers a glimpse into their journeys, the alliances they join in shadows,

and the evolving currents that pull them apart.

Pribislav of Mecklenburg

Pribislav

Once a proud son of an Obotrite chieftain and now a reluctant Christian ally and the ruler of Mecklenburg, Pribislav walks a tenuous path between ancestral loyalty and political survival. Father to Henry, Milena, and Nicholas, he is a man torn between the old gods and the rising tide of Christendom—a ruler haunted by the choices that could either protect his realm or erase his people from history forever.

Woizlava.jpg

Woizlava

A woman of quiet power and unyielding spirit, Woizlava is the steadfast wife of Pribislav and mother to Henry, Milena, and Nicholas. Raised in the old ways yet forced to navigate the tightening grip of Christendom, she is a quiet keeper of Slavic traditions within a court that would see them forgotten. Though she plays the role of dutiful wife, her heart remains bound to the gods of her ancestors—and to the children she fears may be swallowed by fate.

Dobrawa jpg.jpg

Dobrawa

Steeped in the old magic and ancestral memory, Dobrawa is the castle midwife and a bridge between the living and the unseen. She was the first to touch Milena’s newborn skin, the first to see the mark of the runes upon her. Keeper of secrets and ancient rites, Dobrawa carries the knowledge of childbirth and forbidden prophecies—wisdom she will use to guide Milena, even as the world around them darkens.

Bishop Anselm dressed in intricate robes inside the Mecklenburg Castle Chapel

Bishop Anselm

A man of iron conviction cloaked in holy robes, Bishop Anselm is a fervent servant of the Church and a relentless force in the conversion of Mecklenburg. With words as sharp as any blade and eyes that see both sin and opportunity, he is determined to stamp out the old ways—no matter the cost. Calculating and uncompromising, he seeks to bind Milena’s fate to the will of Christendom, using faith as both a weapon and a shackle.

Chacellor Otto.jpg

Chancellor Otto

Deep within the forest, where mist clings to ancient trees and whispers carry the voices of the dead, lives the Obotrite Seer—a woman feared and revered in equal measure. She is the last living link to the old gods, her eyes clouded by visions of what is to come. When Milena seeks her out, the Seer speaks of blood, sacrifice, runes yet to be awakened, and a destiny that will require a choice.

Milena Wayfare.jpg

Milena

No longer a daughter of the court, Milena is a traveler of the tide, lost in a storm and cast upon shores unknown. Stripped of safety and veiled in secrecy, she carries the powers of Berkana and the searing promise of the Raidho rune she finds along the way. Where once she sought to escape duty and pursue her own destiny, now she must navigate unfamiliar lands and cultures. In the cold light of the north, her true journey is no longer a search for answers, but a race to claim her own survival and the sovereignty of her fate.

Heinrich.jpg

Heinrich of Lüneburg

A Saxon noble of proud stature and measured restraint, Heinrich bears the weight of his name with both honor and arrogance. Draped in finely worked velvet and adorned with the lion symbol of his house, he carries himself with the effortless confidence of one raised to be obeyed. His demeanor is poised, his words are neither cruel nor kind, but always purposeful. Promised to Milena by decree, he walks the path set before him without question, believing duty to be its own form of virtue.

Matilda.jpg

Matilda

A dangerous blade in the hand of the Church, Brother Collistus serves Bishop Anselm with unwavering devotion and unnerving precision. A former initiate of the shadowed order known as the Scriptorium Obscura, his past is a litany of quiet purges and forgotten fires. Cloaked in humility but steeped in zealotry, he believes in purifying heresy by any means necessary. Where others waver, he obeys. Where others doubt, he strikes. For Collistus, mercy is weakness, and silence is sacred.

Henry the Lion.jpg

Henry the Lion

Few wield power with such grace—or such precision, as Henry the Lion. Duke of Saxony and Bavaria, he is both patron and predator, cloaked in civility and crowned by conquest. It was his hand that ended the reign of Niklot, and his word that restored Pribislav to his lands, though not until the oath was taken. To the world, he is a Christian sovereign, measured and just. But beneath the gold and gospel lies a sharper truth: Henry does not seek peace. He cultivates control.

Henry Wayfare.jpg

Henry

Heir to Pribislav’s lands and title, Henry is a prince torn between blood and belief. Trained as a warrior yet raised under the shadow of the cross, he struggles to reconcile the old ways with the Christian faith. With a heart loyal to his sister Milena and a mind shaped by his father’s political ambitions, Henry stands at the crossroads of legacy and destiny—unsure whether to embrace the path laid before him or forge his own.

Nicholas of Mecklenburg

Nicholas

Cherished by his family and doted on by his sister Milena, young Nicholas is the bright, inquisitive heart of Pribislav’s household. Though still a boy, he possesses a natural warmth and a curious spirit, absorbing the world around him with wide, watchful eyes. Deeply connected to his sister, he is both her confidant and her anchor—a bond that will be tested as the tides of fate threaten to pull them apart.

King Valdemar.jpg

King Valdemar

Rigid, pious, and unrelenting, Lady Gertrude was sent from Saxony to shape Milena into the ideal Christian bride. Her every lesson is a sermon, her every word a command, enforcing the virtues of obedience and chastity while stamping out any trace of pagan influence. Fiercely devout and deeply contemptuous of anything she deems heathen, Gertrude sees Milena’s wild spirit as a flaw to be corrected—a spark that must be snuffed out before it spreads.

Brynjar summer.jpg

Brynjar Sigmundsson

A warrior forged by the sea and tempered by the old gods, Brynjar is the eldest son of Jarl Sigmund. Stoic and reserved, he carries the weight of his lineage with strength and dignity. Yet beneath the hardened exterior lies a man torn between duty and desire, haunted by a past he cannot forget. When he meets Milena, her fire awakens something buried within him, setting him on a path that will test his honor, heart, and fate.

Jarl Sigmund at Mecklenburg Castle

Jarl Sigmund

A towering presence both in stature and in spirit, Jarl Sigmund is the steadfast ruler of Rungardvik, a pagan stronghold where the old ways still thrive. Fiercely protective of his people and unwavering in his loyalty to the gods, he is a man of iron principles and strategic mind. Though he governs with a firm hand, he is also a father—a man determined to secure his son Brynjar’s future, and that of his two daughters, in a world where alliances shift like the tides.

David, the mysterious merchant from Jerusalem with Mecklenburg Castle in the background.

David Ben Nathaniel

A merchant from the sun-scorched lands of Jerusalem, David is a wanderer, a scholar, a storyteller, and a man whose past is as mysterious as his calm, watchful gaze. Drawn to Milena’s spirit, he becomes her trusted confidant, offering guidance, protection, and the wisdom of distant lands. Though his wealth and influence are undeniable, David harbors secrets that could alter the course of Milena’s fate—and perhaps his own.

Sigrid.jpg

Sigrid of Troms

Stern of face and spare of frame, Father Ekbert serves both the Church and the will of Lord Heinrich with equal fervor. His sermons ring with conviction, yet beneath the cadence of holy words lies a keen awareness of courtly politics. He moves quietly through halls and cloisters alike, a presence whose counsel can shape not only the conscience of a man but the course of an alliance. To those who cross Heinrich, his blessings may come slower, his penances harsher. In Ekbert’s eyes, loyalty to his lord is no less a sacred duty than loyalty to God.

King Magnus of Norway

King Magnus of Norway

A sloth of a man in both build and bearing, Uwe moves through Mecklenburg’s halls with the unhurried certainty of one who knows every corner belongs to him as much as to his lord. His tunic is often wrinkled, his belt strained, and his hands more accustomed to pastry than sword or plough. Yet beneath his languid manner lies a meticulous mind—no debt escapes his ledger, no rumor escapes his notice. Those who mistake his slouch for disinterest soon learn that Uwe hears everything and forgets nothing.

Arvid of Torgar.jpg

Arvid of Torgar

A young Saxon in Heinrich’s service, the squire carries himself with quiet diligence and a watchful eye. His long blond hair falls loosely about his shoulders, framing a face still touched by youth yet tempered by the discipline of court life. Ever at his lord’s side, he tends to armor, mounts, and the finer details of ceremony with the same precision he would a blade. Though his station demands silence, his bearing speaks of loyalty, patience, and a readiness to step forward should duty call.
