WISSEMARA BAY
Wissemara Bay

Known today as Wismar Bay, this sheltered inlet of the Baltic Sea played an important role in the history of the Mecklenburg region. At the time Runebound is set in the late twelfth century, the city of Wismar did not yet exist. It emerged as a settlement only a few decades later, traditionally associated with

Henry Borwin I of Mecklenburg, the son of Prince Pribislav and Woizlava of Pomerania.

To reflect the earlier historical period of The Last Rune of Rungardvik, the location is referred to as Wissemara Bay. While the name itself is imagined, the landscape, coastline, and strategic importance of the region are rooted in the real geography of medieval Mecklenburg, where Slavic, Norse, Danish, and Saxon worlds met along the shores of the Baltic.
